eSIM not working abroad? 9 fixes that solve most problems
Installed your travel eSIM but no internet? Work through this checklist — data roaming, the data line, APN and network selection fix the vast majority of cases.
You've landed, switched on your travel eSIM — and nothing. Don't panic and, above all, don't delete the eSIM: most profiles can't be reinstalled. In almost every case the fix is one of the settings below.
Checklist: try these in order
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Travel eSIMs always roam, even in the destination country.
- Choose the eSIM as your cellular (mobile) data line, and turn off "Allow cellular data switching" on iPhone.
- Make sure the eSIM line itself is switched on.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone.
- Turn off automatic network selection and pick a supported local network manually.
- Check the APN: if the provider lists one, enter it under Cellular data network (iPhone) or Access Point Names (Android).
- Confirm you're in a country covered by the plan and that the plan hasn't expired or run out of data.
- Update your phone's software — old versions can have eSIM bugs.
- Check that the phone is carrier-unlocked; a locked phone may reject another provider's eSIM.
💡 Tip: Signal bars but no internet almost always means data roaming is off, the wrong line is used for data, or the APN is missing.
No signal at all
If the eSIM shows "No service", try manual network selection first, then move to an open area — some plans work only on one local operator. If that doesn't help, the profile may not have activated: contact support.
When to contact support
- You've tried everything above and still have no connection.
- The app shows the plan as inactive or not installed.
- You accidentally deleted the eSIM — many providers can reissue it.
Have your order number and a screenshot of your cellular settings ready. Most providers, including Airalo, Holafly and Saily, offer in-app chat support.
